AVX Awarded Contract for AFWERX High Speed VTOL Challenge
AVX was awarded a contract teamed with Continuum Dynamics, Inc (CDI), based in Ewing, NJ to support the development of state-of-the art, high-speed Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) solutions needed to increase speed and optimize agility of tilt-rotor aircraft in austere environments.
According to Chris Stoke, AVX Engineering, “we are looking forward to exploring new applications of existing and emerging technologies to enable high-speed forward flight well beyond the capabilities of currently fielded VTOL aircraft.”
Several advanced rotor technologies will be studied and evaluated to enable high speed flight. AVX is teamed with CDI due to the company’s robust aircraft design capability and extensive rotor and drive systems expertise. Dr. Todd R. Quackenbush, Co-CEO and Senior Associate at Continuum Dynamics, Inc. shared, “We are delighted both at the opportunity to explore advanced high speed VTOL aircraft designs for the Air Force and to renew our long history of collaboration with the immensely talented staff at AVX”.
The scope of work will include design and analysis of hub, rotor and associated controls required to achieve significant increases in forward airspeed. Kendall Goodman, AVX President cites “this selection demonstrates our customer’s confidence in AVX Aircraft as an innovation leader in advanced VTOL technology and aligns well with the Science & Technology (S&T) pillar of our business strategy.”
